Abrasion resistance is a key performance characteristic of rubber and plays an important role in determining the service life of tires and various rubber products, including conveyor belts, shoe soles, rubber bearings, sandblasting hoses, and more. For passenger car tires used on public roads, fatigue-related wear is the main cause of material loss over time.
Abrasion Resistance Testing
The most common methods for testing rubber abrasion are the Akron abrasion test, the DIN abrasion test (also called DIN wear), and the Taber abrasion test. The Taber test, following ASTM D3389 or ISO 9352 standards, uses two weighted wheels that repeatedly rub the sample on a rotating platform, simulating wear from friction in multiple directions. The results show how well the material can resist real-world wear.
Taber Abrasion Test
In this method, two loaded abrasive wheels repeatedly rub against a specimen mounted on a rotating platform, simulating multidirectional wear. The test results reflect the material’s abrasion resistance under realistic, multi-directional friction conditions. Test procedure is below:
- Specimen shape: Disc-shaped specimens, approximately 100 mm in diameter and at least 3 mm thick
- Abrasive wheels: Typically H-18, CS-10, or CS-17 wheels of different hardness
- Applied load: 250 g, 500 g, or 1000 g
- Number of abrasion cycles: Typically 1000 revolutions
- Result expression: Mass loss (mg), abrasion index, or visual rating
